The State University of New York at Stony Brook, also commonly called Stony Brook University, is a major public research institution of higher education in Stony Brook, New York. The university was established in 1957 and currently has over 24,000 students taking classes each academic year. The athletic teams at Stony Brook are called the Seawolves, and the school mascot is named Wolfie the Seawolf. Stony Brook students have a few options on where they can purchase the textbooks and materials for their classes. The following stores are some of the best places to look for books both on campus and in the Stony Brook area:

The University Bookstore, which is housed inside the Frank Melville Library in the heart of the Stony Brook campus, is the official outlet for textbooks. Open Monday through Saturday, you will find all necessary and recommended materials for your classes when you shop here. Students have a number of choices on how to get their books. If you prefer to buy copies of your books, you can buy new and used versions of most books and save up to 25% when you buy used. Rental textbooks and digital textbooks are available for a wide selection of titles as well. When you rent, you can save up to half off the regular price. When you go digital, you can literally save up to 60%. Just type in your course information on the store’s website and bring in your book list, and a representative will help you get your materials while also recommending the best ways to save money on them. You can order books and other items online if you prefer. If you are looking for Seawolves items to show off your school spirit, there are tons of items right up your alley here, including hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and game-day gear for tailgating at sporting events. Technology items like computer hardware and software are for sale at educational discounts for students. Plus you can pick up other school supplies like binders and backpacks. This store covers all of your needs – and more.

Since Stony Books, the school’s main off-campus bookstore, recently closed, you should check out Barnes & Noble at 600 Smith Haven Mall. It is located just down the road in nearby Lake Grove and is only about a 10-minute drive from campus. At Barnes & Noble, you can buy lots of books in all subject areas, including a variety of academic books and materials for your classes. Although most books are available new, you can always go with the Nook e-reader. This device allows students to read their digital textbooks wherever they are. It’s a very handy tool for any college student. If you get digital books from the campus bookstore, pick up the Nook and you will be all set.
