Cengage Learning is a publishing company that produces academic materials in both print and digital forms. Originally established as a separate entity in 2007, Cengage Learning is headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut. The company currently has about 6,000 employees on staff with offices in 35 different countries around the globe. According to a 2009 article in Publishers Weekly, Cengage ranked No. 11 on a list of the top 50 publishing companies with an annual revenue of about $1.958 billion per year.

Cengage has three distinct divisions with in its company. They are called Academic & Professional Group, Gale, and International. The first division deals specifically with course materials for secondary, college, and graduate level students and faculty. The second division, called Gale, focuses on reference materials for libraries, researchers and business professionals who work in a variety of industries. Finally, the International arm reaches students and educators around the world by providing English-language educational materials.

In 2007, Cengage officially came to be its current organization after Apax Partners, which currently owns Cengage, purchased Thomson Learning. That same year, the company partnered with five other publishing companies to collaborate on creating CourseSmart, an online digital textbook provider. This system allows students to easily download and transfer their e-books to their favorite devices, including desktop, laptop, and tablet computers as well as smartphones and tablets.

Along with its academic products, Cengage also offers a variety of solutions for business professionals. These include online training courses for employees, technical support for computer systems, and publishing options for both print and digital materials.
