The University of Massachusetts, commonly referred to as UMass, is a major public research institution of higher education based in Amherst, Massachusetts. UMass was originally founded in 1863 and now enrolls over 27,000 students. Over 150 degree programs are offered at the school. The athletic teams at UMass are called the Minutemen, and the official school colors are maroon and white. UMass students know how important it is to shop around for the best prices on textbooks. The following bookstores are some of the best places to look both on campus and around Amherst:

The UMass Amherst Bookstore is the official textbook outlet at the University of Massachusetts. It’s located at 1 Campus Center Way in the heart of campus. There are a variety of textbooks options at this store. First off, you can buy brand new textbooks if you want to own them and start the semester fresh. If you’d rather go with used books to save some money, you have that option as well. If you’re looking to save even more, you should consider going with rentals or digital books. All four options are available at this bookstore. Several pieces of discounted software are available as well for students. In addition, Minutemen hats, jerseys, shorts, pants, and even socks can be found here. The fact is when you shop at this store, you can be assured that what you are buying is exactly what you need to be successful in your classes.
NOTE: There is another bookstore on campus called the Textbook Annex located at 360 Campus Center Way. This is basically an additional smaller outlet for books, in addition to the official bookstore.

Amherst Books at 8 Main Street is a fantastic locally owned and operated independent bookstore that has been written about in the New York Times for its comprehensive selection and superb customer service. This bookstore sells thousands of books to residents of the Amherst community, including a nice selection of college textbooks for UMass, Amherst College, and Hampshire College students. In fact, graduate students receive a 10% discount on their purchases. Most of these textbooks are very reasonably priced, so if you’re an undergrad, don’t’ worry because you will save plenty of money as well. You can order your books online or reserve them for in-store pickup. The store hosts a number of events throughout the year, including author readings and signings if you are big on literature.

Food For Thought Book Collective is at 106 Pleasant Street. This bookstore is considered a non-profit book collective that offers tons of books at great prices. The store has a fairly large selection of college textbooks for UMass students and those at other local colleges. These books are available in both new and used conditions and are arranged alphabetically so that you can easily find yours. Since this store is off-campus, you can avoid the mad rush by shopping at a place that is unique and a little off the beaten track. It will make your book-buying experience more enjoyable. Tons of other books to read in your leisure time are also available.
