Bill Nye the Science Guy is one of the most popular personalities among students over the past few decades. Although many know him for his TV show and DVDs, Nye is also an accomplished author.

Nye, a native of Washington, D.C. who is 57 years old today, majored in mechanical engineering at Cornell University where he graduated in 1977. One of his college professors was renowned scientist and astronomer Carl Sagan. Nye took on his nickname when he first appeared on a local TV sketch comedy show in Seattle, Washington. He gained national prominence in the 1990s when he hosted segments for an animated show and later got his own show, aptly titled Bill Nye the Science Guy. This program aired from 1993 to 1998 and gained national popularity. It was primarily aimed at elementary school-age students as it used comedic elements to explain some of the basic principles of science. However, adults were intrigued by the show as well. Teachers across the country often showed the program in their classrooms since it served as a unique teaching aid to educate their students about science.

Nye has authored a number of books primarily for younger children. These include:

Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Great Big Book of Tiny Germs

Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Great Big Dinosaur Dig

Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Consider the Following

Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Big Blast of Science

Among the DVDs Nye has produced include:

Bill Nye the Science Guy: Cells

Bill Nye the Science Guy: Motion

Bill Nye the Science Guy: Atoms

Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Chemical Reactions

As you can tell, Nye’s works span a broad range of scientific topics from physics to chemistry to astronomy. Even though he was an engineering major in college, Nye has become one of the more prominent science educators for children of all ages. In the last few years, however, he has received some criticism for his outspoken views on global warming and creationism. Nye has publicly spoken about his views on climate change and has supported former vice president Al Gore’s efforts to help educate others about Gore’s views regarding increases in global warming in recent years.
